Camping in the last last week of october has taught me....

1. It is not darkest just before the dawn, but it is coldest.
2. Baked beans are amazing for breakfast and warm your very soul.
3. The best way to get warm is to get dressed & do the washing up.
4. A sleeping bag, a duvet, pjs, a hat & bed socks can make a subzero night toasty warm.
5. Taking extra gas is a good idea.
6. Instant porridge is the invention of a genius.
7. Showering is over-rated.
8. 2 girls aged 10&11 can amuse themselves for hours at a time in the countryside.
9. I can still read a book in 3 days when i have time!
10. Caravan's are for wimps :-)
11. The english countryside is gorgeous in the sun, not always warm, but always beautiful.
12. Birdwatching is fun (tawny owl, buzzard, kestrel, spotted woodpecker, green woodpecker, crows, )
have you camped in a tent this late in the year? Did you enjoy it? Would you consider doing it?

Guess I'd be the wimp then! Don't do camping and not keen on caravans either! But you paint a fine picture on it I must say!

  2. I once camped on the Brecon Beacons in late October as an army officer cadet. We didn't have tents, just bashers. I went to 'bed' fully dressed - including beret and boots - and woke up with ice on the inside of my sleeping bag. Never has breakfast tasted so good. Happy days.

Lovely post(and thanks for jogging my memory.)

  3. well done to you for surviving. When I saw your camping tweets it sent me into a panic. I almost froze when camping in September let alone late October. I think I am a fair weather camper.

  6. I have camped in Oz over winter. I have never warn so many layers of clothes to sleep. I learnt that roadkill rabbit tastes great when correctly butchered (post meeting with bumper bar) and slowly cooked in my only bottle of port. That blow up air mattress are bloody freezing. Marshmallows are better after they have caught on fire and caramalised. Toilet runs at 4am are really cold, and squatting in the bush is almost preferable to sitting on an icy seat. And that no matter how cold the river is, seeing a platypus in the wild makes up for it.
